There is no question in my mind that Mr. Walt and Dj Evil Dee are one of the most underrated hip hop production teams ever. They transformed the way producers made beat's after the debut of Black Moon's Enta Da Stage. Heavy filtered bass and striped down nasty drums caused a frenzy and before you knew it beat makers were filtering out bass lines and trashing their keyboard's. The Beatminerz went on to produce classic beats for the like's of Mic Geromino, The Pharcyde, Rasco, and many more. Not to mention creating the ideal dark Boot Camp Click sound for crew members Smif n Wesson, OGC, & Heltah Skeltah. Even though the Beatminerz have been in the game for over 10 year's they continue to produce for the like's of Shortie No Mass, Krs 1, and Last Emp. #1 Soul Brother...............

In my humble opinion Pete Rock is simply the best most consistent hip hop producer ever. Or atleast until Large Professor's Beatz Vol.I drop's later this month (May 30th) and then I'll be speaking the world of Extra P. However, Mount Vernon's Chocolate Boy Wonder is certaintly in the top five and continues to drop top quality with nearly every release he put's out, whether it's his own solo material or the beat's he blesses other act's with. I know, I know, Dj Premier is dope and has had a incrediable career, however I lean toward Pete because I feel he tries to bring it each and every time he put's out music. Where in my opinion Primo tends to phone it in and not put out the type of beats he is capable of. With that said, I wasn't a huge fan of the stuff Pete did for Ghostface, but it's very rare I have issue with his production's. It just makes me happy that all the producers I grew up listening to are still in the mix and relevant, especially the #1 Soul Brother.

Hailing from Long Island New York, Hard 2 Obtain dropped Ism & Blues on Atlantic Records under the watchful eye of Dante Ross of Stimulated Dummies fame. The record is 14 tracks deep and packed to the brim with beats. I remember seeing two videos from Ism & Blues that were shown on BET's Rap City. The first video that came out was also my favorite track on the record called L.I. Groove and the second was the Dj Nastee produced track Ghetto Diamond. If I remember correctly Hard 2 Obtain recieved some minor flack for the amount of white women used in the Ghetto Diamond video, however, I could be thinking of another group. Another little piece of info is the trio were also part of the Constipated Monkey's crew along side Kurious, Bobbito, KMD, amoung others.

One of the first records I remember getting alot of listening out of was the Yo MTV Raps CD. My older sister belonged to one of thoughs 10 cd's for 10 cents services and I took what she didn't dig. Kid n Play's Gettin Funky is the stand out track for me on this record, with Steady B's Serious a close second. Other tracks include classic's like BDP's My Philosophy, Rob Base & Dj EZ Rock's It Takes Two, and Stetsasonic's Talkin All That Jazz. This is the type of record that you can no doubt find on the cheap but it's worth a listen.

Discovered by Epmd's Parrish Smith and member of one of hip hop's great crews The Hit Squad. K Solo enjoyed minimal success with two lp's on Atlantic Tell The World My Name & Time's Up. Both records are worth a listen with stand out cut's on each. Tell The World My Name was the more popular of the two and featured tracks like Spellbound, Fugitive, and Your Mom's In My Business with videos for all three. Time's Up released the tracks I Can't Hold It Back as a single as well as a Pete Rock remix for the track Letterman.

hey eric,

think i can help u on square one infos, as i released that record on my label showdown. yep, ur right, germany was the place where we created this lil gemm. the crew comes from munich (down south of germany, bavaria), 2 emcees, one deejay and one producer. most of the vocals were recorded down in munich, but the baby was put together (and mixed) here in hamburg (up north). we recorded a few joints in n.y. (ali vegas, a.g. & party arty) and the whole thing got finally mastered there by the legend tony dawsey. we released various 12"s before the album came out, there are also various 12" only b-sides. the album got released in japan on mic life records, with an additional track to it. they also released a showdown records compilation soon after (with another exclusive square one track). good to see that people all over the world have an appriciation for good hiphop isht - no matter where its from. well u know, its where its at and these guys knew were it was at that time. RASUL the main emcee and IMAN the beat conductor are both born in iran, they came to germany in their early teens. SIZZERHAND the deejay was born in brookly, bur grew up in munich. DOLO hails from baltimore and got stuck in germany after army services. the universal hiphop movement made it happen that these guys met, I found a demo tape of them and well we had the right timing and feeling to put that isht out. there u go... enjoy the music. on a sad note: the group broke up shortly after release...rock on.........Renski

Longtime Canadian MC vet Maestro Fresh Wes dropped Naaaah, Dis Kid Can't Be From Canada on LMT Records in 1994. Wes has been putting out product for 15 years, but this record to me was his stand out record. It features production from D.I.T.C founder Showbiz and Wes himself. There was a video for the track "Certs Without The Retsyn" which got little play on BET. You also get Percee P shareing the MIC with Wes on the track Pray To Da East. Maestro has since dropped the Fresh Wes portion of his name but still continues to make music and tour in Canada.

I first heard of Dj Magic Mike while watching the one time great Rap City video show. It was for the song Dynamic Duo and featured the vocals of MC Madness. I then heard one of the instrumental tracks off the album Ain't No Doubt About It entitled Feel The Bass III. Feel The Bass III is what sold me on Dj Magic Mike and helped me over look the fact that its tagged as bass music. His beats are not always traditional bass beats, they have a solid hip hop feel . Mike's skills on the turntables are also felt throughout his productions, he's been known to work with Dj Scratch of EpMd fame among other east coast legends. He's been featured in The Source when The Source was worth reading where he showed off his extensive record collection various cars and Orlando based studio.

In 2001 Canadian mc John Smith dropped the sometimes dark and emo but also funny In Transit on Peanuts & Corn Records. After listening to this record one could really fall into the trap of putting Smith into the emo rap catagory. However, after reading who some of his influences are from The Large Professor, to Sam Sever and not to mention some of the production on the record there's no question John Smith knows his hip hop. A very jazzy diggin in the crates kinda feel was felt througout the record, with lyrics ranging from rollerblading to death. Here are some tracks off the record, enjoy!

The 1992 debut entitled Put Your Boots On cemented Double XX Posse as one in a long line of great early 90's acts. Their first single called The Headcracker was plan and simple hip hop music. Even though the exact beat was used by Hard Knocks on the track Strictly From The Bronx. Then came Not Gonna Be Able To Do which was a certified hip hop hit along with regular video rotation on Yo MTV Raps and BET's Rap City. The rest of the record was pretty solid and worth picking up if you don't own a copy.

Raw Produce (Pitch & Cadence) are one of the most slept on groups around. Hailing from Mass. and dropping 1997's Refrigerator Poetry and there most recent product as a duo The Feeling Of Now, Raw Produce continues to prove their in for the long haul. Currently the two are seperated by a state or two but vow to continue making music as Raw Produce. In the meantime, one half of the group Cadence has dropped a couple albums on Day by Day Entertainment and Domination Records. Cadence Poisens The Minds Of Children in 2003 and State Lines in 2004 proved to be nothing more than great and shows the production skills of Cadence.

I first heard of this group via this great thing called the internet, you may have heard of it. I picked up Analyze, Applause, and the Walk Of Life lp. Their production is very solid and well put together. The lyrics are also well thought out with vicious Dj cuts and turntable wizardry. However, I don't really know anything about them, infact I'm not sure Walk Of Life was ever released in the United States. I have reason to believe they have ties to Germany but I can't be sure. i visit your blog from time to time (twice a week) and i saw your newest post about square one... i´m from germany and here those guys are known a bit better than in the usa... those guys are from munich in the south of the country... they surprided the whole hip hop scene here with their song "state of the art"... they´re knwon for good rap in english and beats that sound like those bangers from 93... the group consists of: rasul allah (mc), Gianni Dolo (mc) iman (beats and dj edward scissorhands... after their first single they pushed "applause", which was also very popular... the producer iman is often blamed to bite the style from producers like premo and pete rock... with their album walk of life they had some succes in other countries worldwide (most in east europe and asian countries) today square one disappeared from the hip hop landscape germany but from many ppl here it´s said, that they were the best german crew that raps in english...

Former Juice Crew member and Marley Marl discovery Craig G released two albums as a member of the legendary rap crew. To this day Craig G continues to produce product on the underground scene and is known as one of the better mic craftsman within the New York hip hop scene. I know this album is'nt considered "rare" or hard to find, but Now That's More Like It simply is'nt talked about that much these days. Headed by Prince Powerule the group released the album Volume One in 1991. It consisted of 18 tracks including interludes. Some standouts include 5 Minutes To Showtime, Young Stars From Nowhere, That's The Way It Is, and Got's To Get This featuring The Large Professor on the mic as well as the beat. There was also a video from Volume One for the track Smooth. Powerule vanished like so many during that era, but resurfaced dropping a couple singles with beats provided V.I.C and Eric Sermon.

Member of the Constipated monkeys crew Kurious Jorge for years was known throughout New York for his freestyle skills and running with some of hip hops most notable personalities. After a guest appearance on Power Rules Young Stars From Nowhere in 1991 and another guest spot on Prime Minister Pete Nice's 3 Blind Mice in 1994 Kurious signed with Columbia/Sony in 1994. The album entitled A Constipated Monkey was pretty solid from beginging to end and was created under the watchful eye of Peter Nash aka Pete Nice and Bobbito Garcia for Hoppoh productions. Producers included the SD50's, Pete Nice & Dj Daddy Rich, Bosco Money of Downtown Science fame, and the Beatnuts.

Part of the Black Moon/Beatminerz family but not on Duckdown, Finsta Bundy dropped various 12" singles in the mid to late 90's. With production from the likes of the Beatminerz and Rich Blak and Finsta Bundy themselves they shaped a dark heavy east coast sound. I for one have never even seen a full length from the group. The last release I saw from them was a solo 12" by Finsta and produced by Evil Dee.

On the hip hop classic Mecca & The Soul Brother you may remember hearing a freestyle skit feat. Pete Rock's little brother Grap Luva. After that you may remember reading his name attached to the Half Man Half Amazin beat on Pete Rock's first solo effort. Grap is fastly attaching his name to many tracks these days and giving Sadat X a run for his money. I still have high hopes for Grap Luva and think a full length would be worth every penny. He can grab the mic and be equally as nice on the SP1200, which is what has me wanting more from him, and also only greatness can come from the brother of Pete Rock.

New York veteran dj/producer Kenny Dope has the unique pleasure to be respected by two different musical genres. I first came to know of the name Kenny Dope by listening to his beat records in between songs on the radio, and later on by his remix work with artists like Gang Starr. But to my surprise I learned he was a noted house producer who was making serious waves in the house music scene as a solo artist and also part of the duo Masters At Work. I prefer Kenny's hip hop inspired productions and beats, but I must admit I dig some of his house creations as well. Here's a couple of examples of Dopes productions:

The New Jersey native Tony D started rhyming along side MC Serch before producing for such acts like Poor Righteous Teachers, YZ, and The Crusaders For Real Hip Hop. Unfortunately, he may be best known as "Tony Dick" and a victim of the 1989 classic Gas Face by 3rd Bass. I can't say I'm a fan of his early solo work on Priority, but his productions are always top notch and true to the music. His PRT work is his his best as far as I see it, but if you want to hear some rare Tony D underground look for his last "major" label effort Deja Vu It's 82. That's where Tony formed the group The Crusaders For Real Hip Hop and even recruited fellow Priority label mate King Sun for a cameo appearance. Here's just one of Tony D's many productions:

Queens native and student of the legendary Large Professor, Neek The Exotic has earned underground king status with just a few releases under his belt.You might remember him from his debut on Main Sources Fakin The Funk from the movie White Man Can't Jump where he dominated the mic and the track in my opinion. After several years of rumors about dropping an album on The Large Entertainment label. Amongst numerous droppings of his name in mags and on tv. Neek finally teamed up with The Large Professor on the J Love track Rhyme Mania 99 and dropped a decent Ep entitled Breakin Necks. I still,for the life of me, can't believe this guy hasn't gotten the kind of deal where he could blossom and put out good product.

The first time you saw one half of the duo named Da King & I most likely wasn't on there debut album cover, but at the movies instead. Dj Majesty was the dj who fell victim to Dj GQ in the hip hop inspired drama Juice. Then you saw him graze the cover of Contemporary Jeep Music with partner in crime Izzy. Just like tons of others this was the groups only release despite two videos and in my opinion a over all healthy album. Gang Starrs Dj Premier contributed a remix to this weeks mp3, but here's the album version for Flip Da Script.

Penicillin On Wax..................

South Bronx native Tim Dog was first known as an extended member of the legendary Ultramagnetic Mc's. You can hear him exchange verses with Ultra on tracks like Make It Happen and Porno Star on their second album Funk Your Head Up. Tim later dropped his first of two solo albums on the Ruff House record label called Penicillin On Wax which is a bonified hardcore rap classic complete with Ultra cameos and beats by Ced Gee. The stand out track is the blunt anti west coast Fuck Compton which was a top five single on the rap/r&b charts in New York for obvious reasons. The onslaught of disses didn't stop with Fuck Compton, infact there are several references to NWA's sexuality and mic skills throughout the album. There are a lot of stand out tracks on this lp that are worth checking. The track I like the most from Penicillin On Wax is I Ain't Havin It.

A different kind of diner, the good kind................

Without a doubt this is one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time. The Large Professor produced the whole shot and did'nt get caught sleeping behind the sp1200. I know alot of people will say the rhymes were off or whatever, but I think everything jelled perfect. An unknown at the time named Dj Rob Swift just added to the classic record with pin point scratching and energy. There were two vids produced for the album, Ak hoo hoo and The Bomb, which got decent rotation on BET. The only thing I found odd or weird about the record was the title they selected to represent the album, Vagina Diner. My reasoning is there really is'nt a track that hints in association to the title. There is'nt any over sexed theme or non-stop sex talk on the record, just rhymes and above average beats provided by the Extra P. I can pull this album out at anytime and still get something out of it, most of which is the true talent of the one time tagged Boy Wonder beat maker Paul Mitchell. I could have picked any track from the record to represent it, but I settled on 30 Days

An old friend of mine dropped some names of groups I should give pub to. One of the groups was the duo Hard Knocks from the Bronx. The group made up of Hardhead (the mc) and the dj Stoneface based there debut and only album that came out on the one time underground hip hop haven Wild Pitch Records on there true life experiences growing up in New York. After reading a very small blurb about the group in The Source several years ago it came to my attention that they recorded and lived in the Atlanta Georgia area but still maintained there Bronx style of beats and rhymes. There album School Of The Hard Knocks still remains one of my favorite albums of all time, from beginning to end it's a classic with no room for argument. They released a single and video for the classic anti cop track Dirty Cop Named Harry, and if anyone has that video I would very much appreciate a copy!! The mp3 I chose to represent them is Strictly From The Bronx, enjoy.

Referred to as the white Epmd, Tom J and Steve Austin mirrored the legendary style of Eric Sermon and Parrish Smith to a T. I loved every single they dropped but was not very impressed by the album as a whole. The album never dropped officially, but was leaked to the internet after several years. There was a video for the track All She Wanted which I saw aired one time on BET's rap city. The A.T.E.E.M (Chubb Rock, Rob Swinga, Hot Dog & FM) most likely inspired by the 80's tv series is one of the many lost hip hop groups to come out of the 1990's. Select records provided the home base for the foursome and was also the label for Chubbs solo and more successful career and the highly underated Red Hot Lover Tone among others. They released a video and 12 inch single for the track Yeah.

One of the pioneers of the pro black rap movement, King Sun has managed to stick around for well over a decade. However, it wasn't long when King had to switch gears and come a little more street/hardcore. In the mid 90's King Sun dropped an ep which featured production by Tony Touch and dark street oriented lyrics by Sun. Ice Cube even felt his rath when he found himself dodging the plastered covered fist of King Sun outside club. The legend goes, King Sun asked Cube to listen to his demo and maybe hook up with the Lynch Mob, when Cube showed no interest in the tape and said some things you wouldn't say to King Sun. King then threw a punch at Cube but only to miss and send his fist into a car windshield. My favorite King Sun track is the Louie Vega produced Fat Tape with Be Black not to far behind.

Discovered by the dj/producer Chyskills from the one time mega group Onyx. Rumpletilskinz consisted of three mc's and R.P.M the dj/producer. The group was very similar to Onyx and Leaders Of The New School with there style of hard drums and thumping basslines. What Is A Rumpletilskin? was the crews only album release and hasn't been heard from since. They released Attitudes as there video and first and only single from the lp.

One of hip hopes most underrated albums also featured one of hip hopes most underrated producer. Sam Sever who played a big part on 3rd Bass albums The Cactus Album and Derelicts Of Dialect, as well as providing a slew of remixes and and beats from everyone from Big Audio Dynamite to A.D.O.R. Adding his own live drums to many of his productions and blending them with loops from Fleetwood Mac to Herb Albert, Sam Sever was a true pioneer. On the Mc side, Bosco Money who also contributed on the production side although limited, had a nice delivery and fit well with Sam's production. After the group broke up, Bosco set out on a solo venture called The Bosco Money Project. Quick note.........check out Pete Nice's In J Minor for another classic Sam Sever production.

One of the few groups to put out a single on the Phat Wax label (to my knowledge) other than Preacher Earl and Chuck Chillout. N-Tense dropped a single and video for Raise The Levels Of the Boom which featured the energetic and monsterous Busta Rhymes vocal hook. The B - Side to the 12 inch featured a less than steller posse cut which fails to out shine Raise The Levels.....

No No No, not the ones you here on the radio these days or see on BET and MTV. The two Mount Vernon prospects of the legendary soul brother #1 Pete Rock. There is'nt alot of up to date info I can provide on the YG'z. Infact, the last I heard of them was an incident that occured at a A.D.O.R show when they rushed the stage and beefed with the fellow MV MC. Which makes that incident all the more strange, being there from the same area and were discovered and produced by Pete Rock.
